Camel Kick by D-pi Camel Kick by D-pi
hehehe... get it?

Ok... so I recently found out that the guys at Udon selected one of my Street Fighter illustrations. I'm kinda amped. I don't enter contests too often, and I almost NEVER do fan art, but street fighter holds a special place in my heart and I wanted to be a part of the legacy ...and since I wasn't invited...
I can't show the entry that won, but I'll show the four that didn't!

I like Elena too. I just wish she looked a little more like she was from Kenya... Also, her play style should be closer to Balrog (Mike Bison) with allot of faints. She could've been from cuba or Martinique: [link]

Fabulous work on this piece! The colouring is really clean and professional looking, and the perspective is outstanding.

They both have interesting facial expressions, too; are they based on ones from existing Street Fighter material (games, manga, etc.), or did you design them yourself?

I been doing capoeira for a few years now, I been loving street fighter for most of my existence on earth, and I'm gonna say this might be the most perfect piece of art i have ever seen.

Great job, man!! And I love the life bars!

A little bit of a side note about capoeira: African-American slaves created it as a way to get exercise rather than for defense. I believe that it was designed to look like dancing so that the slaves would not get caught.
D-pi Featured By Owner Sep 27, 2008
-you should read up on capoeira and it's roots in slave culture and revolution. ...Also it's parallel arts found outside of brazil and it's roots in west African culture. It's way more than 18th century aerobics. Logic follows that if south American slaves were made to do grueling work, they wouldn't need to work out, and if so, why would they create a work out regime based on striking each other? Look it up.

Oh, I forgot that.

You have to be some kinda genius to so nonchalantly include that in a drawing like this.

Fuhck. amazingh.

I like Elena, too. But any time I see her I can't stop hearing her annoying stage music. The music was ok, too, it just repeated way too much/fast.

I felt the same way, you did a great way of making her look more black. Great job! The textures are awesome too and color. I love everything about it really. the tasty perspective especially. Is this all done digitally? I am curious. yeah Nice stuff.

I thought it was strange how they had a Brazilian in the game, and he wasn't the one fighting with Capoeira, but rather they picked Elena. Makes me wonder if she's from Angola or something.
D-pi Featured By Owner May 13, 2008
...then again, I've only met like one brazillian out of 20 who practices Capoeira. I'd say she definitely practices Angola style, because of how low and paced her Jenga (or whatever) is as opposed to a chracter like Eddie... but then again, it's just a cartoon.
She's supposed to be Kenyan... I don't think I've ever met a person from Angola who practices Capoeira either. I was always under the impression that the Brazil was an inseperable cultural aspect of all capoeira. In fact, I think it was a Brazilian who founded the Angola style as well. I'm not sure, but I think both modern styles were created after the middle passage and Angola ironically as a reaction to the faster one (can't remember the name...) There was a large migration of Japanese to Brazil in the 20th century (another ironic similarity with germany), so I can totally believe there would be a little brazilian kid who's nasty at Karate.
If there was an african martial artist in a street fighter game, he should be an ill Senegalese or Sudanese Nuba wrestler... Or a nigerian Kyokushin karate practitioner!!! that'd be awesome!

PS The Chameleon exemplifies the trickster element of capoeira and breakdancing, hiding moves... even though it's not really a traditional trickster animal (that I've heard of)

I should also mention that I really like this picture. I said nothing of it before, and I feel bad.

So, uh...I like this picture. A lot. =P
oujisama Featured By Owner May 13, 2008
1/20 is still a startingly high amount if you ask me! That ratio sure beats any odds in any other country. =P I was referring to the chances of it more in context with the game's street fighter, a game focused on fighting, which makes it surprising to me that Sean wouldn't be doing Capoeira, seeing as how he is from Brazil. You make an excellent point though, as there are TONS of japanese in Brazil (it has the second highest concentration of japanese folk outside of Japan itself) and you can easily see how Japan has affected Brazil's martial arts in a great way (Jiu-Jitsu, and heck even Capoeira has some Jiu-Jitsu like take-downs).

Capoeira has some of its roots in Angola tradition. Capoeira certainly did evolve into what it is today while it was in Brazil, both the mother style and the contemporanea style, but it shares many similarities with some Angolan rituals, dances, and games. Mestre Bimba himself, the guy who created Capoeira Regional (The faster, more aggresive style..this happened in the 1930's) and is mostly responsible for the legalization of Capoeira, was an adept at Batuque, an Angolan game with similarities to Capoeira. Also, many, many songs sing of Angola and other places in Africa where the slaves came from. What most scholars think happened in Brazil is that there was a melting pot effect, where people of many cultures and skills came together and over time created something that was unique to them and them alone. Unfortunately, the history of Capoeira is mostly hidden, as a lot of documentation was destroyed. =(

And Makato already does Karate! Sean should be pullin' out some Jiu-Jitsu. And as far as Elena goes, I'm sure she plays Angola (with a bunch of regional kicks thrown in) but it's entirely believable she'd be from Kenya...I don't think the developers were too concerned about being entirely accurate. =P

And yeah, Chameleons do capture the whole malicia thing really well. I love 'dem. <3

dude, those life bars and that smoke...

I think what I get from looking at your stuff is like
if you took one of those brilliant argentinian artists
from the dusty past of comix made him live on andre julliards couch and then shot some future juice directly into his drawing hand.

something like that.
anyway i like the picture.

I don't like crotch shots either, but when it's overt exploitation/eroticism I'm all for it.
On some art school shit: Fighting Street is a celebration of cartoon physical dynamism. The figures are exploitative. The cultures on show are exploitated. Its a fucking circus!!! that's what I love about it.
